Projects Currently in Progress
My projects combine academic research with practical experience in public administration, politics and business. They address human–AI interaction, the design of public administration, the history of liberalism, and the societal implications of digital transformation.

Photorealistic Avatars as Human–Computer Interfaces
From Digital Interface to Interactive Agent
Photorealistic avatars open up new possibilities for interaction between people and digital systems. In public administration, they can serve as virtual points of contact, explain complex issues and support citizens in accessing digital public services.
This research project examines how human likeness and design influence human–computer interaction. It focuses on cognition, perception and physiology, as well as on the conditions under which avatars foster trust or trigger reactions associated with the so-called uncanny valley.
The aim is to develop scientifically grounded insights into the design of trustworthy, comprehensible and user-centred avatars.

Systems Theory and Public Administration
Komplexität verstehen und Verwaltung gestalten
Public administrations are complex social systems. Their capacity to act depends not only on individual organisational units, but also on the relationships and interactions between them.
A systems-theoretical approach helps analyse these interdependencies, improve our understanding of complexity-related challenges and develop new approaches to solving them. In light of digital transformation and the growing use of artificial intelligence, this perspective is becoming particularly relevant.

Freedom of Thought in Hanau, Too
A Chronology of Liberalism at the Local Level
How does liberalism develop at the local level? Which historical, social and political conditions shape liberal thought and action?
This book project traces the history of liberalism through the example of Hanau. It explores the town’s development, its traditions of immigration and religious diversity, as well as the ideas and personalities that have shaped liberal thought.
This historical perspective is complemented by my own experiences gained over many years of work in local government and politics.

Terrapolis
City, Society and the Digital World
Terrapolis is the working title of a long-term conceptual and research project. The term combines terra (earth) and polis (city) to express a vision in which living environments, society and technological systems are viewed as an interconnected whole.
People, spaces, objects and digital forms of communication provide the foundation for new opportunities for cooperation. Digitalisation changes not only the ways in which we communicate, but also the possibilities for social organisation and collective action.
Drawing on Herbert A. Simon’s work The Sciences of the Artificial, the project explores how this complex configuration is changing and what new forms of living together and working collaboratively may emerge.
